Understanding the trade-offs between climate change-induced aridity and agricultural water demand in the Souss basin, Morocco

A study on Water Governance Across Management Scales, titled "Understanding the trade-offs between climate change-induced aridity and agricultural water demand in the Souss basin, Morocco," focuses on integrated water resource management, particularly in the Souss basin in Morocco, considering the challenges posed by population growth and climate change-induced water stress. It utilizes a generic decision support system called ModSim, applied for the first time in the region, to analyze agricultural water usage and demands.

ModSim is calibrated using data from 1990 to 2019 to replicate deficit episodes and water supply declines in the basin's dams. The simulations show a significant decrease in water supplies, leading to unmet demands for surface water in irrigated areas, which are partially met by groundwater withdrawals.

The study highlights the importance of reliable decision support tools for water managers to understand basin water trade-offs. It emphasizes the need for further investigation to improve the representation of groundwater/surface water interactions, especially in water-stressed regions like Souss.

In conclusion, the study provides a conceptual framework and detailed discussion to guide efficient water management and governance, underscoring the necessity of enhanced evaluation methods for addressing water resource challenges in arid and semi-arid regions.
