IOFS Director General Addresses International Conference on Food Security in Samarkand

On 7 September 2023, the Director General of the Islamic Organization for Food Security (IOFS), H.E. Prof. Yerlan Alimzhanuly Baidaulet, delivered an insightful and visionary speech at the International Conference on Food Security held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, on September 7, 2023.

In his address, Director General Baidaulet expressed his deep honor at participating in this significant event, highlighting the historical and cultural importance of Samarkand as the birthplace of Imam Bukhari, a renowned Islamic scholar. He emphasized the conference's central objective, which revolves around the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with a particular focus on Goal 2 - Zero Hunger. He reiterated IOFS's commitment to addressing global hunger, especially within the member countries of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation ( OIC ). 

The Director General then provided an overview of the mission of IOFS, which is dedicated to safeguarding sustainable food security in OIC Member States through socio-economic development and targeted programs in agriculture, science, technology, humanitarian aid, trade, and food export. He introduced the IOFS 2031 Strategic Vision, a comprehensive plan outlining the organization's goals for achieving food security in OIC Member States.

Prof. Baidaulet highlighted the upcoming 6th General Assembly of IOFS, scheduled for October 2-3, 2023, in Doha, Qatar, where Member States will convene to further the organization's growth.

He commended the commitment shown by FAO and all participants in addressing the challenges hindering progress toward SDG 2, emphasizing the need for international cooperation. Prof. Baidaulet underscored the importance of sustainable agricultural practices, increased access to technology, and enhanced productivity in agri-food systems.

The Director General also emphasized the importance of strengthening agri-food systems in landlocked countries, suggesting sustainable practices, improved infrastructure, technology access, and transportation enhancement as key strategies.

Director General Baidaulet shared the active role of the IOFS in supporting landlocked countries, citing the Water Integrated Plan in Niger as a prime example. He reiterated IOFS's commitment to its 2031 Strategic Vision and its dedication to implementing programs that empower communities, enhance livelihoods, and drive progress.

The speech was met with appreciation and applause from the conference attendees, reflecting the global commitment to addressing food security challenges and the pivotal role IOFS plays in this endeavor.
