In his statement, QU Dongyu, the Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, highlights the urgent need to address food insecurity and malnutrition in the MENA region, exacerbated by conflicts, climate crises, and recent calamities. He emphasizes the importance of accelerating the transformation of agrifood systems to enhance efficiency, inclusivity, resilience, and sustainability. This will be a key focus at the upcoming FAO Regional Ministerial Conference for the Near East. Dongyu stresses FAO's commitment to supporting member countries in this transformation through tailored strategies, partnerships, and flagship initiatives like the Hand-in-Hand Initiative and the One Country One Priority Product Initiative. He underscores the importance of proactive measures to ensure food security, economic stability, and social cohesion, with a particular emphasis on addressing structural inequalities and empowering marginalized groups. Dongyu concludes by urging collective action to prioritize resources towards achieving food security and better nutrition for all.
