ACTION AID: From Desolation to Prosperity; success story of Naghma Bazar village
09 February 2024

The success story of Naghma Bazar village, located in the remote Imam Sahib district of Kunduz province, Afghanistan, highlights a transformation brought about by the support of ActionAid. Seyed Asadullah, a resident of the village, witnessed firsthand the positive changes that occurred in his community, particularly regarding the revival of agricultural lands and the overall prosperity it brought.

The key to this transformation lay in the rehabilitation of the Kol e Wakil Pahlavan drainage, a critical waterway servicing thousands of Jeribs of agricultural land. Neglected due to the impact of long-term conflict and community resource limitations, the drainage had become filled with debris, causing flooding and significant damage to agricultural lands.

ActionAid intervened with a plan to implement a cash-for-work project, supported financially by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). Seyed Asadullah and fellow community members actively participated in the mobilization efforts led by ActionAid, working tirelessly for 20 days under their supervision. Their hard work not only cleaned the drainage but also provided a much-needed boost to the local economy.

The impact of the project was multifaceted. Beyond the tangible improvements in infrastructure and agricultural productivity, it also fostered social empowerment. A total of 1410 daily wage workers, including many women, were provided temporary employment opportunities, each receiving fair compensation. ActionAid's commitment to gender equality was evident in their decision to hire women for gabion weaving, empowering them economically and socially.

The gratitude expressed by Seyed Asadullah and the villagers towards ActionAid is palpable. Their lives have been transformed, and they now cultivate their lands with renewed hope and confidence. The success of Naghma Bazar village serves as a testament to the power of unity and determination in overcoming challenges. It stands as an inspiring example of how communities can work together to create a prosperous future, even in the face of adversity.
