The Distribution of Wheat Flour and Food Products in Afghanistan, IOFS Signs an Agreement with UNAMA
17 April 2023

On 16 April 2023, His Excellency the Director General of the Islamic Organization for Food Security (IOFS) Yerlan Baidaulet, launched the first phase of the Organization’s Humanitarian Food Assistance Program “Flour for Humanity” in partnership with the Afghan Red Crescent Society (ARCS), delivered to the ‘Neediest Houses’ (Marastoon) of Kabul and to support orphans of Afghanistan.

The food distribution in Kabul was implemented in parallel of other Marastoon under the ARCS management in Herat. It should be recalled, that the initiative was implemented within the framework of IOFS’ mandate on Afghanistan Food Security Program (AFSP) provided by the 17th Extraordinary Session of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers on the Situation in Afghanistan, held on 19 December 2021 in Islamabad, Pakistan, and based on the generous support by the Republic of Kazakhstan, Republic of Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan.

The Director General and the accompanying delegation then had the chance for a courtesy visit to the OIC Mission in Kabul, where they were received by its Director General, H.E. Mr. Mohammed Saeed Al-Ayyash, with whom there was a follow-up on consultations held on the day before. The IOFS welcomed the full readiness of the OIC Mission in Kabul to continue its valuable support on all matters related to the AFSP implementation.

The last part of the Humanitarian Mission was devoted to a visit to the headquarters of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) for bilateral exchanges with its Head and Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Afghanistan, H.E. Mrs. Roza Isakovna Otunbayeva. Such auspicious occasion was marked with the signature of an Agreement with UNAMA in which the IOFS is to provide a modest humanitarian food convoy composed of 68 tons of wheat flour generously donated by IOFS Secretariat and private companies from Kazakhstan to reach, by mid-May 2023, those in need hosted at selected Drug Addicted Treatment Centers in Kabul in partnership with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). In fact, UNAMA and IOFS are to explore further avenues of cooperation in the context of providing suitable crops to replace those that fuel the drug landscape in Afghanistan, and a Joint Task Force is to be accordingly established.

During his Humanitarian Mission, the Director General was assisted by Mr. Abdula Manafi Mutualo, Advisor at Coordination and Cooperation Department, and Mr. Asset Mukazhanov, Communications Advisor.
