TRADE ARABIA: Novel Foods, partners to build $500m biotech cluster in UAE
12 March 2024

Novel Foods Group, based in Abu Dhabi and a leader in the alternative proteins sector, along with global engineering firms, has agreed to begin planning a $500 million biotech production site in the UAE. The agreement, signed during the Healthy Innovation Conference in Dubai, involves Novel Foods, Glatt Group, BioEngineering AG, and CB Consultancy AG.

This new facility will focus on producing brazzein, a natural sweet protein significantly sweeter than traditional sugar. The use of brazzein is growing amid a global increase in demand for alternative sugars, with brazzein offering a genuine sugar taste without sacrificing health.

Traditionally derived from West African berries, the challenges in harvesting are being addressed through precision fermentation. Novel Foods Group aims to provide sweetness without compromising health or taste and is actively engaged in creating brazzein-infused recipes and collecting consumer feedback through partnerships with universities and research institutions. Their R&D center in Dubai supports regional product development and co-creation efforts.
