Padi farmers in Sekinchan using the locally-developed NMR152 seed have reported significantly higher yields ranging from 20% to 60%, according to Science, Technology, and Innovation Minister Chang Lih Kang. Launched in 2021, this seed has shown resilience against extreme weather conditions such as droughts and floods, making it popular among farmers due to its ability to reduce costs while increasing productivity.
Chang mentioned that discussions with the Agriculture and Food Security Ministry are underway to address issues related to the quota for the new seed distribution among farmers. Currently, about 10% to 20% of padi farmers nationwide are using these seeds, with efforts aimed at increasing this number to possibly 30%.
In Selangor, approximately 24% of padi farmers have adopted the NMR152 seed. The ministry intends to collaborate with relevant authorities to organize sandbox projects, accelerating the development and distribution of this seed to mitigate food security concerns in Malaysia.
HMN Sdn Bhd managing director Datuk Mansor Mohd Nor highlighted that around 3,000 to 4,000 hectares of padi fields in Selangor are utilizing the NMR152 seed, resulting in an additional yield of eight to ten tonnes per crop on average.
Dr. Sobri Hussein from Nuclear Malaysia emphasized that proper care and management practices, including soil type considerations, are crucial for achieving higher yields with the NMR152 seed.
Meanwhile, in Langkawi, Muda Agricultural Development Authority (Mada) chairman Datuk Dr. Ismail Salleh assured that Kedah's padi fields remain unaffected by the El Nino phenomenon. Measures such as rotational irrigation have been implemented to ensure sufficient water supply for rice cultivation, promoting sustainable agricultural practices amidst the ongoing dry spell.
