The Gulf Peninsula: Tackling climate challenges in energy, water, and food essential for sustainable solutions
22 August 2024

The latest Sustainability Research Paper by the Al-Attiyah Foundation underscores the urgent need for climate-resilient solutions in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) to mitigate the severe impacts of global warming. Recent climate data reveals record-high global temperatures and sea surface temperatures, with the MENA region experiencing even greater temperature increases and severe weather events. The region faces compounded challenges due to its arid climate, high population growth, and increasing demand for scarce resources. Key concerns include reduced agricultural yields, heightened water scarcity, and energy production strains. Immediate measures involve enhancing water efficiency and adopting advanced cooling technologies, while long-term strategies focus on diversifying energy sources with renewables, like Qatar’s Al Kharsaah Solar PV project. Addressing food security through sustainable practices and reducing post-harvest losses are also crucial. An integrated approach that considers the interconnectedness of energy, water, and food systems is essential for effective resource management in the face of escalating climate challenges.
