In a concerted effort to combat the pressing challenges of desertification and drought in OIC-Africa countries, the Statistical, Economic and Social Research and Training Centre for Islamic Countires (SESRIC) partnered with the Islamic Organization for Food Security (IOFS) to organize an online training course on 16 October 2023, as per the Joint Action Plan of IOFS and SESRIC. The course aimed to equip participants with essential knowledge and skills to tackle issues that are affecting many developing nations within the Islamic world.
The training course commenced with a warm welcome from Mr. Onur Caglar, the Director of the Training and Technical Cooperation Department of SESRIC. He emphasized the need for collective action and shared expertise to address the dire consequences of desertification and drought in OIC-Africa countries. This sentiment was echoed by Mr. Abdula Manafi Mutualo of IOFS, who delivered a speech underscoring the severity of food security issues within the Islamic world.
Mr. Mutualo stated, "In recent years, we have witnessed the harsh reality that many developing nations within the Islamic world are grappling with severe food shortages, hunger, and malnutrition. It is disheartening to acknowledge that at least one in ten Islamic regions is experiencing the pangs of hunger, and a staggering 240 million individuals are confronted with acute food insecurity. These challenges are the result of a complex interplay of factors, including socio-political instability, armed conflicts, widespread poverty, and the relentless impacts of climate change."
To address these multifaceted challenges, the IOFS has been calling for urgent action and launching initiatives such as the Africa Food Security Initiative (AFSI) and the Afghanistan Food Security Program (AFSP). These initiatives highlight the commitment to finding sustainable solutions to food security challenges within the geography of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
Mr. Caglar further emphasized, "As we gather here for this training course, it is crucial to understand that our collective efforts are the key to combat desertification and drought in OIC-Africa countries. By working together, sharing knowledge and experiences, and implementing innovative solutions, we can make a significant impact. Let us all commit ourselves to this noble cause and take proactive steps to ensure a sustainable and secure future for our region."
The training course delves into the specific focus areas of drought monitoring and mitigation, soil erosion control, water harvesting in dry areas, and dynamics of wind erosion and control of sand encroachment:
1. Drought Monitoring and Mitigation: The course highlights the silent but devastating force of drought, equipping participants with the knowledge and tools to effectively monitor drought conditions, implement early warning systems, and take proactive measures to mitigate its impacts.
2. Soil Erosion Control and Water Harvesting in Dry Areas: Techniques and strategies to conserve soil and enhance its fertility are emphasized to combat soil erosion. Moreover, the course places strong emphasis on water harvesting in dry areas as a game-changing approach to tackle water scarcity.
3. Dynamics of Wind Erosion and Control of Sand Encroachment: Participants learn about the dynamics of wind erosion and innovative techniques to stabilize sand dunes, crucial for combatting desertification and preserving the environment.
The Training Course on "Combating Desertification and Drought" is an essential step towards a more sustainable and secure future for OIC-Africa countries. The dedication of Statistical, Economic and Social Research and Training Centre for Islamic Countries (SESRIC) and IOFS in addressing these critical challenges is commendable, and the knowledge gained from this course promises to make a substantial impact in the fight against desertification and drought.
