OIC: Saudi Arabia to Host a Donor Conference to Support Displaced Persons and Refugees in the Sahel and Lake Chad Region
26 August 2024

Saudi Arabia will host a high-level donor conference on October 26, 2024, to address the severe humanitarian crisis affecting Nigeria, Niger, Chad, Cameroon, Burkina Faso, and Mali. The conference, organized in collaboration with the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre (KSrelief), the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), aims to mobilize resources and coordinate aid for approximately 33 million people in need, including 11 million displaced individuals and refugees in the Sahel and Lake Chad region. This region has faced prolonged instability, exacerbated by the environmental impact of the drying Lake Chad, leading to significant social and economic disruption. The conference seeks to raise awareness, build partnerships, and support both immediate humanitarian responses and long-term solutions. Key figures, including Dr. Abdullah Al Rabeeah of KSrelief and OIC Secretary-General Hissein Brahim Taha, have highlighted the urgency of this initiative. UN officials Joyce Msuya and Filippo Grandi also emphasized the critical need for international support to address the crisis and support displaced populations and their host communities.
