13 September 2024

According to the latest Global Food Security Index by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), Kazakhstan has been ranked 32nd for global food security deterioration from 2019 to 2022. The index evaluates food security based on affordability, availability, quality and safety, as well as sustainability and adaptation across 68 indicators in 113 countries. Kazakhstan’s overall score is 72.1, with specific scores of 78.0 for affordability, 67.2 for availability, 76.3 for quality and safety, and 65.4 for sustainability and adaptation. The report highlights that Kazakhstan, classified as an upper-middle-income country in the Asia and Pacific region, faces a 2.5% prevalence of undernourishment, 6.7% stunting among children, 2.0% underweight children, and a 21.3% prevalence of obesity. The country's Human Development Index score stands at 0.83. Finland, Ireland, and Norway were the top performers in food security, while Yemen, Haiti, and Syria were at the bottom. The disparity between the best and worst performers has been widening since 2019, reflecting increasing inequality in the global food system. The United States ranks 13th with a score of 78.0. Syria experienced the most severe decline in food security, dropping 10.5 points between 2012 and 2022, with other notable deteriorations in Haiti, Venezuela, Colombia, and Zambia. The EIU attributes the weakening food system to overlapping risks such as agricultural volatility, resource scarcity, economic inequality, climate-induced shocks, and trade and supply chain disruptions.
