In Depth News: Women Pave the Way for Sustainable Agriculture in Bangladesh
15 August 2024

In the village of Baradal in Assashuni, southwest Bangladesh, Martha Achary and her team are pioneering innovative hydroponic farming to address the challenges of soil and water salinity. Due to rising sea levels and frequent cyclones, traditional agriculture has been severely impacted, making it difficult to grow vegetables in the area. To combat this, the women lease a plot of land and use clay tubs filled with biofertilizers and stored rainwater for irrigation. This method allows them to produce vegetables despite the saline conditions. The project not only meets the nutritional needs of their families but also generates income from vegetable sales, with around 10,000 taka (about USD 85) worth of vegetables sold monthly. This initiative is part of the Gender-Responsive Coastal Adaptation (GCA) project, supported by the UNDP, Green Climate Fund, and the Government of Bangladesh, which empowers women and promotes climate-resilient agriculture in vulnerable coastal regions. Hydroponics offers a sustainable solution by conserving water and eliminating the need for soil, making it particularly suitable for areas affected by high salinity. The approach has shown positive results, with ongoing efforts to expand its use in climate-sensitive areas.
