Egypt Today: Egypt implements strategic plan to boost food security
14 August 2024

The Egyptian government is intensifying efforts to bolster the stockpile of strategic crops as part of a comprehensive national program recently approved by Parliament. The initiative focuses on enhancing food security through various measures aimed at increasing the availability of essential crops like wheat, rice, corn, and beans. Key strategies include achieving self-sufficiency in wheat by leveraging technology, improving storage systems, expanding silos, and modernizing irrigation and drainage systems. Additional incentives will be provided to farmers to boost wheat production, while efforts to increase domestic vegetable seed production and utilize concessional financing for storage and supply will be prioritized. The government also plans to expand agricultural land through both horizontal and vertical methods, enhance the agricultural land tenure system, and promote sustainable agriculture through green communities. To improve the agricultural investment climate, the government will streamline land allocation procedures, update legislation, and support secure land tenure. Emphasis will be placed on meeting quality standards for agricultural products, advancing agricultural research and practices, and improving the overall efficiency and competitiveness of Egypt's agricultural sector to support long-term food security and sustainable development.
