Alaa Farouk, Egypt’s Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, recently led a meeting with Hisham El-Hosary, head of the agriculture and irrigation committee in the House of Representatives, alongside seed industry experts and private sector representatives. The meeting focused on advancing Egypt’s seed industry for crops and vegetables through modern technologies, in line with directives from political leadership to enhance productivity and bolster the national economy. Minister Farouk emphasized the government's commitment to fostering private sector participation, improving the investment climate, and overcoming obstacles to ensure food security. He highlighted the importance of advancing seed breeding and scientific research to produce high-quality seeds resilient to salinity, climate change, and water scarcity. This effort involves leveraging research stations and farms affiliated with the Ministry of Agriculture to conduct experiments and expand seed production. The Minister also called for increased awareness and agricultural extension regarding high-quality seeds, technical support for farmers, and stringent measures to combat fraud in seed trading. El-Hosary assured full support from the House of Representatives for achieving food security and agricultural development, stressing the need to encourage local seed production to reduce import costs. Farouk acknowledged the challenges faced by the seed industry, reaffirming the ministry’s commitment to addressing these issues, updating relevant legislation, and implementing effective solutions. The meeting included key figures such as Magdy Abdullah, Ahmed Odaam, Shereen Assem, and Khaled El-Salamony.
