Arab News: Saudi markets overflowing with 11 types of locally produced fruit
16 August 2024

Saudi Arabia’s markets are currently featuring an impressive array of 11 varieties of fresh, locally grown fruits, reflecting the government's push for self-sufficiency in food production. The fruits available include figs, dates, grapes, pomegranates, bananas, cantaloupes, watermelons, papayas, guavas, citrus fruits, and apples, as reported by the Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture (MEWA). This abundance is attributed to the ongoing efforts to enhance food security and supply fresh produce, in alignment with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030. The MEWA’s “Harvest Season” campaign, part of these efforts, highlights the ministry’s commitment to increasing local fruit and vegetable production, supporting farmers, and promoting modern agricultural technologies. The campaign aims to boost awareness of the health benefits of organic, seasonal produce and improve marketability. Assistant Undersecretary Muhammad Al-Abdullatif recently visited the North Market Fruits & Vegetables in Riyadh to review local farmers' produce, underscoring the initiative’s success and the ministry's dedication to public health and sustainability.
