Arab News: Philippines seeks collaboration with Arab countries to empower halal entrepreneurs
21 August 2024

The Philippines is intensifying its efforts to grow its domestic halal industry by seeking collaboration with Arab countries, aiming to empower Filipino entrepreneurs and leverage the burgeoning global halal market, valued at over $7 trillion. According to the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF), which oversees the welfare of Muslim Filipinos, the government plans to attract 230 billion pesos ($4 billion) in investments and create 120,000 jobs by 2028. This strategic push includes establishing the Halal Division under the Bureau of Muslim Economic Affairs to ensure local halal products meet Islamic standards and expanding the industry’s reach. The Philippines, with its Muslim population constituting about 10% of its 120 million predominantly Catholic residents, is keen to become a central hub for halal trade in the Asia-Pacific region. As part of this initiative, officials are engaging with Arab nations, particularly Saudi Arabia, to gain insights and training on developing a robust halal ecosystem. Hamdan Moslem and Hazrat Adnan Macabando from the NCMF’s bureau highlighted the importance of learning from established halal markets and exploring potential investments to build a halal hub in the Philippines. The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has also launched a strategic plan to enhance the country's halal industry, focusing on boosting domestic trade, increasing exports, and improving halal integrity. Aleem Guiapal, the DTI’s Halal Industry Development program manager, emphasized the need for capacity-building and raising awareness to position the Philippines as a leading halal-friendly trade and investment hub in the region. This concerted effort reflects the country's ambition to become a key player in the global halal market while enhancing economic opportunities for its Muslim population.
