05 June 2024

The UN Bonn Climate Change Conference commenced in Germany, with Evans Njewa, head of the Least Developed Countries (LDC) Group, emphasizing the urgent need for predictable and accessible climate finance, especially for vulnerable regions like the LDCs. Njewa highlighted the devastating impacts of climate change, citing examples such as Malawi's experience with tropical cyclone Freddy. He stressed the necessity for simplified and accessible funding to address climate-related disasters, calling for a new framework that accurately addresses the needs of LDCs. Anne Rasmussen, lead negotiator for the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS), echoed concerns about the erosion of special considerations for vulnerable regions and called for a new, more ambitious climate finance target, emphasizing the need for transparent and accountable arrangements. Michai Robertson, lead negotiator on Climate Finance at AOSIS, emphasized the lack of financing in developing countries, calling for increased investment to cope with the climate crisis. Approximately 6,000 attendees, including national delegations and civil society organizations, are participating in the conference, which aims to sustain momentum in addressing urgent climate issues between COP sessions. The agenda includes discussions on climate finance, national climate action plans, fossil fuel transition, and adaptation strategies, with outcomes expected to shape decisions at the upcoming UN Climate Change Conference in Baku, Azerbaijan.
