Al Jazeera: Researchers warn methane emissions ‘rising faster than ever’
11 September 2024

Researchers report an unprecedented rise in methane concentrations, a potent greenhouse gas second only to carbon dioxide in contributing to climate change. Over the past two decades, methane levels have surged by 20%, and the increase has accelerated over the last five years, driven primarily by coal mining, oil and gas production, livestock farming, and decomposing organic waste. In 2020, methane emissions doubled compared to the previous decade, with significant increases from China and Southeast Asia linked to industrial activities and landfills. This rise threatens global climate goals, including the "Global Methane Pledge" which aims to cut emissions by 30% from 2020 levels by 2030, though major emitters like China, Russia, and India did not sign the pledge.
