A pilot project is underway to establish a new multimodal export route from Kazakhstan to Pakistan, traversing Uzbekistan and Afghanistan, with a final leg by sea to the United Arab Emirates. Kazakhstan Railways JSC NC KTZ, represented by Managing Director Bauyrzhan Urynbasarov, announced this initiative during a visit to Afghanistan. The project involves collaboration between Kazakhstan's KTZ Express, Pakistan's National Logistics Cell (NLC), and Kazakhstan Bio Synergy Co., the exporting company. Cargo, specifically aluminosilicate hollow microspheres, is being loaded in the Pavlodar region and will be transported by road via Uzbekistan and Afghanistan to Karachi Port in Pakistan. From there, two containers will be shipped by sea to Jebel Ali Port in the UAE. The estimated delivery time for this route is approximately 20-25 days. Success of the pilot project is expected to drive further development of the route and attract significant cargo traffic in the future.
Additionally, Kazakhstan expressed interest in participating in the construction of the trans-Afghan railway project, which includes two key railway lines: Termez – Mazar-I-Sharif – Kabul – Peshawar and Herat – Kandahar – Spin-Buldak. Kazakhstan aims to contribute by supplying materials for the railway's upper structure, such as sleepers and fasteners manufactured domestically. The project is anticipated to substantially decrease cargo delivery times in the region and lead to cost reductions in transporting goods. Furthermore, discussions during the meeting addressed the possibility of re-launching air travel between Kazakhstan and Afghanistan, with a memorandum of understanding already in place permitting limited passenger and cargo flights between the two countries.
Over the past three years, Kazakhstan has witnessed a steady increase in exports to Afghanistan, particularly in rail traffic volume, reaching 2.7 million tons in 2023, with flour and grain comprising a significant portion. Forecasts indicate further export growth of 40% in the coming years, with transportation expected to triple by 2030.
